In No Particular Order (2009 - Ongoing)
In No Particular Order is a mammoth series of works created over a number of years in an ever-expanding tableau. The paintings are hung, grid-like and in a random order. They exist as one mass, or individually, or in small sets - the viewer can decide how many pieces go together and in what order. There is an irreverence in this process; as the grid can be dismantled rearranged, reassembled; and in this action we see contemporary imagery side-by-side with more classical forms, to challenge, enhance, upset and mock each other.
Martin Gustavsson’s wide range of subject matter and genres reveal a broad spectrum of influences from historical to contemporary art. The body as a site for desire, decay and perspectives from art history is a recurring theme.
The series has been seen in a number of acclaimed museum exhibitions internationally, including at the Göteborg Art Museum, Nordnorska Festspelen, Harstad and the Guildhall Gallery in London.
Exhibition Run: 31 May - 06 June 2018
Exhibition hours: Monday - Friday 10am - 5pm
About Martin Gustavsson
Martin Gustavsson is a London-based Swedish painter who is fascinated by process, by interrogation and enquiry. Gustavsson is interested in undermining hierarchies, within art forms and in art history, and this work attests to that. His paintings explore formal technique, and express an endless curiosity about the nature of paint, the history of the form and its relevance.
Gustavsson attended The Royal University Collage of Fine Art in Stockholm, Sweden and Middlesex University, UK. His works have exhibited internationally in Scandinavia, the UK, Japan, US, and the Middle East.
